Susan Fowlie:
Generosity honours “incredible” family physician

When you ask Susan Fowlie why she is a supporter of Women’s College Hospital, she replies: “Two words – Carol Kitai.”

Dr. Kitai is Fowlie’s family physician. “She is just incredible,” Fowlie says. “I know that she’s there for me, and that she takes the action needed to get things resolved.”

Fowlie trained and worked as a corporate librarian before leaving the workforce to raise her two children. Thirteen years ago her children were grown and she was looking for new opportunities. She noticed a storefront for rent on Yonge Street and leased it without even knowing what kind of business she would open. Hollace Cluny has become one of the city’s leading design and decorative arts shops. “It’s been a wonderful journey,” Fowlie says. “A lot of the products in my store are artisan-based, so I’ve met many talented, passionate people along the way. I get to travel to fabulous places and work with great people – what more could you ask?”

Last year Fowlie had a “potentially very scary” health concern. She appreciated Dr. Kitai’s prompt action and the good care she received after surgery at Women’s College.  A few months later, when Fowlie received a call asking her to consider a donation to the Hospital, she said yes immediately and made a generous gift. “I feel badly that it took that phone call to spur me to action,” she says now. “My husband and I had talked about doing something for Women’s College, and we plan to make a further donation.”

Fowlie hopes her gift will support the work of “dedicated but over-worked” physicians like Dr. Kitai, and help make care even better for patients. “I know the hospital will use the money where it is needed most. For me, it’s about recognizing the fabulous care and concern I received.”
